The 25th of April, ANZAC Day, is an important day for most Australians and New Zealanders, and I for one, remember it wherever I am in the world. Despite the years that have passed and the modern, busy times we live in, I am proud when I see just how many people still make the effort. When the alarm goes off, it’s somewhat easier to dismiss the urge to grumble; and once you’re at the Dawn Service, the peace and the solemnity and the pure respect and gratitude for the people that shaped and continue to protect our country, make it all worth it.
If you’re looking for a way to commemorate ANZAC day while in Chile, you may struggle.
The Black Rock Pub is celebrating the day by showing the Essendon and Collingwood AFL match. Head down to the pub to revel in your AFL rivalry, exchange some banter and drink some brew.
Usually the Australian and New Zealand government representatives in Santiago hold services, but you often need an invitation. To get one, you’ll need to be registered with either the Australian Embassy or New Zealand Embassy in order to be on their mailing list. You can register on line at their respective websites. If you’re not registered yet and really want to go to this year’s service, you can try calling their respective offices to ask for an invitation: A: 56-2-550 3548, NZ: 56-2-26163000.
As always, you can listen to triple j online and check out the news coverage on ABC, being mindful of the time difference.
Lest we forget.
