Nothing makes any homesickness go away like celebrating holidays from back home. If you celebrate Halloween, take heart, you can find Halloween celebrations here in Santiago, Chile. It is still mainly an adopted expat holiday but each year, the local participation is growing. If you have kids, there are some neighborhoods, in Santiago, where even the locals go trick or treating, so ask around to see where the best locations are. It’s even a holiday in Chile, although a different holiday, Reformation Day, which has been celebrated since 2008. November 1st is also a holiday here in Chile, All Saints’ Day.

Getting a costume:
This is the easy part, as there are many costume shops around Santiago where you can buy or sometimes rent your choice of costumes and accessories. Just keep your eye out for Disfraces (costumes) shops, they are located all over the city and you can usually find at least one in every shopping galleria. If you are looking for a lot of options, check out Calles Rosas and Veintiuno de Mayo near Mercado Central where they have a cluster of shops for costumes and all your party decorating needs. You can also find costumes on sale at the second-hand stores on Bandera and around the city. All the big grocery stores (Jumbo, Lider, Totus) have Halloween displays with some costumes, decorations and candy, though the selection and quality will vary. If you’re just looking to stock up on basic Halloween decorations and candy they will fit the bill.

Getting a pumpkin
If you want to carve pumpkins, most of the big Supermarkets will sell them close to Halloween. Jumbo currently has them for about $5.000 CLP each. If you are in need of something earlier, head to La Vega: they always have pumpkins, although they are not likely to be the standard orange carving pumpkin you’re used to (if you’re cooking them, they taste about the same though!).

Celebrating
If you’re are looking for a party, Halloween in Chile is also referred to as la Noche de Brujas (the night of witches). Many of the expat bars and local clubs put on a Halloween party, we will add the ones we hear about to this article, so check back for updates if you’re looking for places to go.
